Agreement Reached to Appoint Sushila Karki as Interim Prime Minister, Parliament Dissolution Remains Unresolved

President Ram Chandra Paudel has agreed to appoint former Chief Justice Sushila Karki as the prime minister of an interim government proposed by the ongoing Gen Z protest movement. However, consensus on the agenda of dissolving Parliament, a condition put forward by the protesters, has not yet been reached.

Late Thursday night, negotiations on the formation of the interim government continued from 10:30 p.m. until Friday morning, involving President Paudel, former Chief Justice Karki, Chief of Army Staff Ashok Raj Sigdel, and the president’s legal advisor Baburam Kunwar.

“Agreement has been reached to appoint former Chief Justice Karki as the interim prime minister. However, the issue of dissolving Parliament remains unresolved,” said an official who attended the meeting. “Extensive discussions were held on how to complete the constitutional process for both the interim government and Parliament dissolution. The president and former Chief Justice share similar views on many aspects, but the constitutional procedure needs careful attention. Talks will resume Friday, and a consensus may be reached to move forward with the appointment process.”

Despite five hours of discussions on Thursday night, differences over Parliament dissolution persisted. The next round of talks is scheduled for Friday at 9 a.m.
